Suggest Treatment For Viral Fever In An Infant

Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question:
Hi Doctor,

I am a lactation mother of a 13 months old baby. My baby is suffering from viral fever for the last 6-7 days and for the last 2 days I am also suffering from severe cold and cough. Also there is a pain in my throat.
I have tried otrivin nasal drop and ceftas 200 (twice daily) but they are not of much help.
As I am still breast feeding I can’t take loxof 500.
Everybody in my houses suffering from cough might be due to some strong cold virus.

My physician is out of town hence can you suggest some accurate medicine/antibiotics which can give me some relief and help me to recover. (Please note i am allergic to Penicillin, Asprin, Disprin, Anacin, Sulphur Drugs)

Also is there a chance that my baby will again get affected from me….
Please advice

Thanks and Regards
XXXX

Brief Answer:
You are most probably having upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) .

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query , reviewed your medications and understand your concern.

As per your clinical history it appears that you are most probably having upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice
Antiseptic Mouth Wash twice daily like betadin ,
Steam Inhalation twice daily ,
Tab azithromycin 500 mg once daily ,
Tab paracetamol 650 mg twice daily &
Tab cetirizine 10 mg at night .

You will get relief within 3-5 days. Avoid otrivin nasal drop they are habit forming & cause damage to nose mucous membrane shouldn't be use more than 7 days.

You will need to see your doctor to get a prescription .

Since you have taken antibiotic earlier , it become less likely that you can transfer infection to your baby .

Hope this information helpful to you .If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Regards.

Thank you for your reply.

I feel very sleepy with cetrizine. And since I usually feed my baby at night, it will be difficult for me if i am in deep sleep.

Can I take some alternative medicine?
