Suggest Treatment For Ulcers In Mouth

Question: Dear Sir/Madam

I am 36 yrs of age MALE.

I have been suffering from the problem of mouth ulcers for some 7-8 years. I have been visiting dentist with this problem for a very long time. Whenever I visit my dentist, I am advised to take B complex tablets and Vitamin C tablets and generally the ulcers come under control in two-three days.

But this time I am having the ulcers that are really stubborn. Even after taking the Vitamin B complex capsules of Becosule capsules(that containes Vitamin C and other vitamins) three times, my ulcers are refusing to go.

I rinsed my mouth first with Betadine Gargle but it aggravated my pain and burning sensation so then I tried Hexidine rinse, but this also failed to improve my situation. Earlier these two rinses were helpful in controlling ulcer pains. But now I still have the painful ulcers.

Last week, I had a full plate of tomato salad and Tooti Fruity ice cream which had some fruits also. Today, I read in the internet that tomato and fruits like pineapple can make the ulcers go worse. I think that perhaps because of tomato and the fruits in ice cream my ulcers have become stubborn.

Since I have used Colgate brand of Tooth Pastes ( Like Colgate Salt and Coalgate sensitive) to curb my gum sensitivity, could it be possible that some element in the toothpaste are the underlying cause of my recurrent ulcers.

Please help me to get rid of this ulcer problem, for I am finding real difficulty in eating food,,drinking water and talking to others. Please

Here are few things to be done .

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX XXXXXXX ,

Thanks for consulting Health care magic .
This is Dr. Priyanka Tiwari answering your query .

I have read your query and understand your concern . As far as mouth ulcer is concerned see Mr. XXXXXXX ulcers are generaly due to benign causes - stress induced , nutritional deficiency (vitamin B deficiency , folic acid ) , Hormonal influences , improper sleep . For this I shall suggest you few measures that might help you and heal ulcers :
- Maintain proper oral hygiene .
-Avoid hot and spicy food . Avoid frizzy drinks.
- You can apply ointment containing lignocaine and choline salicylate like Mucopain or Mugel on ulcer 3 to 4 times a day .
- As you are taking Vitamin B complex that is good . You can also take medicine like Metronidazole can be of additional help .
- You can also take analgesic for pain like Ibugesic plus or tylenol for added benefits .

As you are asking about toothpaste see toothpaste can cause allergic reaction within 2 to 3 days use of toothpaste. If you feel you can change your toothpaste . You can use toothpaste like Colgate total toothpaste . You can do these remedies if Ulcer will not heal In one week to 10 days then I will recommend you to consult oral surgeon for clinical examination to rule out infective conditions .

At this point of time it does not seem like a problem to be worried about . Try these tips before consulting the doctor .

Hope I have answered your quey .
If you have further query I will be happy to help.

Dear Doctor,

Thanks for reply.

As far as Colgate Total is concerned, I think that it contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS) and that is not good for mouth ulcers, I have read about it somewhere. But if you say so, I will give it a try.

I was really worried about my situation, but your response made me feel relieved. Thanx for telling that there is no problem to be worried about.

Thanks for your advice again.

Dear Ma'am,

Just one last thing I want to ask you and that is that is there any gargle solution other than Betadine and Hexidine(Because I have tried both and have felt pain), so that I can put the liquid in my mouth and swish it to the back of my tongue?

Actually, I have 3-4 ulcers at the end of my tongue and it is very difficult to reach that part with the finger to apply the gel.

In the lip regions I can apply the gel easily, but the back of tongue is literally not reachable.

So, if it is possible to tell you about any liquid with which I can gargle then it will be very convenient for me.
