Brief Answer:
Variety of causes and reasons

Detailed Answer:
Good morning. My name is Dr. Saghafi and I am happy to answer your question. I might point out that I've read multiple responses to the same questions by colleagues and it's highly likely that I will repeat information they've already supplied but no matter. Let's see how well I can meet your need for information.

Twitching in the legs is a common problem in the elderly worldwide though it is probably under reported and under treated. Reasons for this include failure to recognize the seriousness of the condition as well as the very truth of the matter which is we don't know the exact reason why these twitchings begin in the first place and so medications for the condition are limited and often times don't even work very well for many people.

As has been suggested a visit to a neurologist may reveal some chemical imbalances in your system which when corrected can lead to improvement and if lucky complete resolution of your symptoms. If lab analysis doesn't solve the problem then, electrical or sleep studies may be undertaken.

DEFINITIONS: Idiopathic- Unknown cause or origin (as it applies to medicine)

Fasciculation- The contraction of a limited number of muscle fibers which are visible to the naked eye but not forceful enough due to the small number of fibers to fully contract a muscle or move a joint or limb.

If any of the information I've asked or provided has been useful to further your understanding or give you ideas as to which direction to turn next and you'd like to CLOSE THIS QUERY then, could you do me a favor and leave some brief feedback with a STAR RATING for the quality of the response?

Alternatively, we could continue this conversation and you may upload information if available such as lab tests, etc. and I would be happy to review them. I would especially love to see any CT or MRI's of the brain then, and now.
