Suggest Treatment For Tumor In Caecum Spreading To Liver

default
Posted on Fri, 30 May 2014
Question: My Father has been diagnosed with a 5 cm Tumor on his Caecum. he has enlarged lymph nodes and it has spread to his liver.

Initialy the surgeon was going to operate and remove the tumor and then they did a cat Scan and found it hd gone to the liver.
The NHS oncolgist has just said that thye will not do surgery and offered my dad Oral chemo, or IV.

What are our choices here?
do we get a second opinion? do we speak to the surgeon, or dores the oncologist have the final say?

thank you in advance

Brief Answer:
Need to discuss more with oncologist...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through the medical history of your father and I feel sorry for the sad situation he is in.

Unfortunately, the situation of your father is not that good as tumor has reached liver (metastasis).

Now, with regards to chemo, I would recommend to discuss it further with oncologist. Sit down and discuss this issue carefully with him/her:
- what are the benefits of doing chemio?
- does your father health condition supports chemiotherapy?
- what are the side effects?
- how can you help your father while on chemio?
- and most important: is chemio worth in case of your father? What can you expect: longer life with more pain or less pain/sufferings?

This is all I can help. Next, usually, such tumors are prone to bowel obstruction. So, I advise to talk with surgeon :
- how to understand if your father has bowel obstruction at a particular moment?
- how you can help him at home?

I also advise to take to local clinic handling tumor/cancer cases as their support/help ca be very useful for you.

All the best and God bless!
