Question: My wife has a pain in the back of her leg by the back of the knee joint which came on suddenly. It is sore to the touch, and she has difficulty walking because the pain increases if she does so.

It appears that she may have developed a ruptured Baker's cyst which is common in knee arthritis. Other possibility is Deep vein thrombosis or DVT which can cause pain in the cold when swelling.

Do keep the limb elevated. Apply warm packs to the affected region. Avoid massage.

Get an ultrasound and Doppler scan to look for Baker's cyst or DVT.
