Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of GERD

Posted on Tue, 23 Aug 2016
Question: I am having issues with my throat closing up and the small bites I have eaten come back up totally covered in phlegm. I already take Pantaloc every single morning for acid reflux. This is very embarrassing and I usually have to excuse myself and go to the bathroom or get loads of napkins. It seems my throat stays closed because I cannot even take a drink of water when this happens and it is "very embarrassing". XXXXXXX XXXXXXX YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Barium swallow/Upper GI endoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

As per your post, you have regurgitation of food and also not able to drink water.

Though reurgitation can occur acid reflux disease, inability to drink water is an unusual symptom and does not occur in acid reflux disease.

I would advise you to get either a Barium swallow test or an upper GI endoscopy done to rule out any obstruction along the food pipe.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX Kini, I do not believe it is acid reflux because that is a burning that comes up in the throat. The Pantaloc I take every morning seems to take care of acid reflux. I feel it is has to do with something my stomach rejecting my food like an allergy, due to the forming of phlegm around each and every bite. Could it be something possibly where I need to do some kind of a stomach cleanse. I do feel my throat close when the phlegm seems to be forming in my stomach. My throat is not closed all of the time just when I have incidents with food.
Thank you, XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Stomach cleanse may not help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me with more questions.

Even I have said in my previous post that some of the symptoms do not fit in to acid reflux.
And I have suggested a few tests to find the cause.

A Barium swallow test or an upper GI endoscopy may be done to rule out any obstruction along the food pipe.

Stomach cleanse may not help.

Regards,
Dr.R.K.
