Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lymph Nodes Around The Neck Along With Sore Throat

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Feb 2019
Question: Good morning - I have been sick for 10 days, went to doc last Friday with swollen glands/lymphnodes, very sore throat. Doc prescribed penicillin 500 every 8 hours. I am still feeling bad and the infection, i'm afraid, has gone into sinus cavity and my front tooth (where I have a crown). That, along with my right neck gland is sore and swollen. I do think I have gotten a bit better, but don't know if this warrants another doc visit. Suggestions appreciated. Thank you

Brief Answer:
I suggest you visit your doctor again.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Please could you tell me if you have fever during this time and today. What kind of examination have you done before you started treatment with penicillin?

I suggest to visit your doctor again. You should do a full blood count, a throat culture and neck ultrasound to see the lymphnodes (the size and the structure) better along with a sinus X-ray.

I hope my answer helps you.Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you Dr. Dede. The exam consisted of ear check, throat check, and her just checking my neck (via hand). I had a fever last Tuesday and Wednesday. My face started feeling prickly and strange, along with my front tooth been tender to push on it. I am not sure if I have a fever now, but maybe. I will most likely not be able to get in to see the doctor today, so was going to try a local urgent care (I'm in DC at work). I am more tired today, than yesterday, so concerned. I agree - def need blood work and throat culture.

And, my neck has been itching, which may be a result from the penicillin, but getting a little rash. I also have Fibromyalgia, so not sure if that would matter or not, but other than that, pretty healthy 52 year old female.

Brief Answer:
I suggest to meet your doctor again.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Based on your history, I think you should do a full blood count, throat culture, neck ultrasound and EBV serology (IgM, IgG) as well to exclude mononucleosis.

I think that the rash could be because of penicillin.

I hope my answer helps you.
