Suggest Treatment For Swollen Lips When Diagnosed With Dementia

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Dec 2016
Question: My 94 year old mother with mild dementia has extreme swollen lips. Does not recall eating anything different or putting anything on her lips. I found a snack of almonds and cheese in her room that she ate that is different; also found a tube of pain relief med that she could have mistaken for lip balm. Gave benedryl x 2 yesterday. Still has swollen lips today. No discomfort; eating fine, breathing fine.

Brief Answer:
Corticosteroids may be used also.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Swollen lips, or angioedema causes nearly always include an allergic reaction to some food, drugs or natural allergens.

In your mother's case, it could be some ingredient of the snack or pain reliever meds that caused such allergic reaction.

Care must be paid to any throat and/or tongue swelling in such case, and, besides Benadryl use that should be continued for few days, corticosteroids such methyl prednisolone shots may be used to reduce lips swelling.

Discuss with your mother's primary care Doctor about these issues.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards.
