Suggest Treatment For Swollen Eyes And Runny Nose In A Child

Question: Hi Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

My 8month old niece got cold and she is suffering from the running nose and her eyes are swollen. We are giving nasal drops and steam and vicks to her, but still she irritates from the cold, Please suggest to get her to normal asap. Also suggest to keep avoid from the cold for kids and if get tell how to take care of her.

Hello

Thanks for the query

I can understand your concern.The most common cause of cough and cold in this age is some viral infection.
Management is mainly conservative.
It may take 5-7 days for complete recovery
I would suggest you to give her combination of antiallergic like chlorpheniramine and decongestant like phenylephrine(Drop Timinic or Maxtra).
This is a prescription drug so please get it prescribed by a physician.
Continue giving nasal saline drop,steam inhalation and Vicks as usual.
I won't get worried if baby is active/feeding well, and there is no vomiting or breathing problem.

Avoid direct exposure to cold air or contact with children suffering from cough/cold.
Observe the baby and if you find any breathing problem,persistence of fever,lethargy or poor feeding consult your pediatrician immediately.

Thanks for your reply,. yes she is suffering with breathing problems may causing of nose blocking and swelling of eyes and nose parts, as you suggested i will try the chlorpheniramine . if there is no relief then will meet pediatrician.

I would request you to give combination of both chlorpheniramine and phenylephrine.
Phenylephrine is a decongestant and will help in relieving nasal blockage.Similarly steam inhalation and nasal saline will also provide relief from nasal blockage.
Chlorpheniramine an antiallergic will take care of swelling and allergic component.
Please monitor the baby closely for respiratory distress and if it increases or there is poor feeding consult your pediatrician immediately as this may be due to involvement of lower respiratory tract(bronchioitis/pneumonia).
