Question: I am in retail, stand alot, I am 72 yrs old and have swollen ankles with a red-rash around the ankle, what could it be? I do not have good support with my feet as they are very thin with a very high arch. Could the right arch support be the problem?

Brief Answer:
probably the leg veins

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

standing a lot at your 72s causes a lot of distress to your leg veins. This is the most likely cause of your condition. Chronic vein insufficiency may cause skin discoloration in the feet (a red or brown discoloration usually). You can check whether your veins are sufficient or not with an ultrasound scan.

Other common potential causes of bilateral leg swelling include heart failure, kidney disease, low blood proteins (usually associated with liver cirrhosis), etc. Since you haven't mentioned any health problems, I doubt that any of the above applies to you. The veins are the most likely cause.

Regarding your doctor's explanation, although I don't like to comment on colleagues' opionions, I don't believe it's adequate. I think you'd better do some investigation for the cause, starting from an ultrasound scan (triplex) of the veins. In the meatime, try to avoid standing for too long, or try to walk rather than stand and to find some time to raise your legs (like lying down with the legs on a pillow) so that you'll facilitate the return of the blood to the body.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
