Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Bruising On Ankle During Pregnancy

default
Posted on Sat, 4 Jul 2015
Question: I am 22 weeks pregnant and sprained my ankle 7 days ago. It seemed to be better after a few days so I walked on it, but now getting worse with swelling and bruising, pain particularly in the posterior ankle/Achilles region. For the past 48 hours my calf muscle has been very sore and stiff. Now I am getting muscle spasms/cramps in the lateral portion of my lower leg. Should I be concerned about blood clots? Or is this an Achilles injury that I should seek medical attention for? The calf pain is what worries me. Also I can't extend my foot fully without being in pain. The actual ankle doesn't bother me as much as the Achilles and calf. Please advise!

Brief Answer:
Achilles injury more likely than DVT

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. From the given description I suspect the cause for your presentation to be more likely due to injury to the achilles tendon rather than a blood clot.

But it wouldn't hurt to visit your doctor and get examined by requesting for an ultrasound or venography of the region. Also look out for a few symptoms, and if at all you experience any of the following, then you should report to your doctor immediately:

+Shortness of breath
+Dizziness or feeling light headed
+Increased pulse
+Chest pain
+Blood seen in sputum or while coughing

In the meantime, please make sure you take adequate amount of rest, elevate the leg while being seated or in the supine position; ice application and avoid weight bearing as much as possible. I hope you recover completely and have a healthy uneventful pregnancy. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
