Suggest Treatment For Supraventricular Tachycardia

Question: I am having around 10 pvcs per min or one every 3-4 beats, I went to er this morning and they did ekg which was ok, chest xray that was ok and blood work all ok. Gave me one liter of saline or at least I think it was a liter. it was one bag. My rythmn once I was hooked up was of course normal bc by the time I got there the palps stopped. I take l abetalol through my cardio for my pvcs. I actually saw them yesterday for follow up and they said my pvcs were unifocal and benign. The doc at the er said even if I was in bigeminy that was ok and they usually don't treat it. My bps were boarderline low 102/60 so didn't want to mess with my labetalol dose. so in your opinion is it ok to have so many pvcs a minute and is bigeminy ok to have? im very worried about vtach or other major problems from them. I am 27 female with history of svt but had an ablation in 2006.

Brief Answer:
They are indeed benign and need no treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

The electric impulse that gets our heart going, originates from the SA node which lies over the right atrium. It is then conducted through a definite path to the ventricles. SVT or supraventricular tachycardia occurs when there is an extra focus generating electrical impulse or when there is some abberant pathway causing reentry of the same stimulus to cause extra beats. The ablation was done to seal of this abberant pathway. There could be some similar shortcut pathway taking the stimulus to the ventricles and causing the premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). They are indeed benign and not a cause of concern unless they cause some definite problem. So, it is ok if you have PVCs and pulsus bigeminis. Your doctor has taken the right decision in not treating them.

Hope that helps.
