Suggest Treatment For Subcutaneous Lump On Palmar Side Of Hand

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: I have a small, pea sized firm subcutaneous lump on the palmar side of my hand lust lateral the base of the middle finger. It is tender when I press on it. I play tennis and did not notice it during 3 hours of play this Saturday, so I am not certain if it is new or not. I just read it may be DC (didn't get the spelling) or a "Gideon's lump." My question is whether I should go in to have it examined and what treatment would be appropriate given whatever the likely diagnosis might be. I'm 46, female, non-smoker, non-drinker and healthy and active.
Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Hand Specialist obviously.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

To recapitulate: Female / 46 - played tennis on Saturday - just noticed it last night before bed - pea sized - firm - tender - subcutaneous lump on the palmar side lateral to the base of middle finger - not certain whether new or not - read - DC (Dermoid Cyst) or Gideon's (Ganglion) - Wants to know whom to go to - whether to visit - appropriate treatment - likely diagnosis ....

It is difficult to not notice such a lump, hence likely to be a lump of recent origin. Dermoid has a long history of existence without any symptoms and does not grow overnight.
Gideon's is also usually never sudden in onset although it may come in a short notice, but very rarely tender.
Another possibility can be a pre-existing cyst and got enlarged after the play due to internal swelling or bleeding.
Foreign Body Granuloma.

Hand Specialist would be the best choice to consult with. Clinical evaluation and actual physical examination by the Surgeon can give better diagnosis. Exact diagnosis can give the best idea about treatment - whether to wait and watch or to go for an excision (removal).

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for relevant queries or if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
