Posted on Tue, 23 Sep 2014
Question: I had food poisoning over the long weekend (not sure what caused it exactly) -symptoms appeared monday-vomiting, some fever, cramping, diarrhea for 4 days (black stool, watery and mucus) and dehydration. Also some mid back pain focused on the right side where the kidneys are (pain comes and goes mostly after a meal). I am concerned about the back pain. all other symptoms have improved except for cramping and gas after introducing solids. should I seek medical care?

Brief Answer:
A primary clinical evaluation can be undertaken.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I would suggest to get a primary clinical evaluation and stool analysis done. This will rule out if there is any gastrointestinal infection.Doctor will mostly put you on course of antibiotics with antacids.

Black stools was due to altered blood in stools.Pain associated with meals indicates gastritis or ulcer, may be post infection or food poisoning.

Back pain can be due to referred from abdomen.

Cramping indicates that there is still intestinal inflammation. It takes time to resolve.

For Gas , you can take gasex.Avoid spicy food, leafy vegetables and being empty stomach.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.

My concern is the back pain. Is this common? Similar pain to the gull bladder attacks previously suffered (gland removed 2 yrs ago) what should I ask my dr on this concern? What test can he perform to ensure no other ailment is developing?

Brief Answer:
Not really worrisome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I feel back pain is not very much worrisome, but a ultrasound can be undertaken to see if everything is fine.

Also mention this to your doctor , so that if needed doctor can suggest other investigations like x ray to rule out any isolated back related issue.

Regards.
