Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Pain While Swallowing

default

Question: Hello! I'm currently out of the country on my honeymoon. Came down with a dry sore throat a few days ago which also presented with a dry cough, hoarseness, and painful swallowing. It got to a point this morning where the pain was so severe and my voice was merely a whisper that I went to the onsite hotel Doctor to get checked out. After a quick exam he said there was no infection and recommended an oral anti-inflamatory pain medication (sounds like laryngitis?). I also requested a saline nose spray and throat spray. However, after the $100 doctor visit, $50 saline spray, and $20 throat spray neither is offering much comfort. My husband has a back up RX for methylprednisone that his doc gave him before we left just in case his allergies turned into a breathing issue. He is on the mend and has been getting better with his allergy medication and nose spray so he doesn't need his RX. I've been reading up and stumbled across some info related to the use of steroids to treat throat pain. I'm in desperate need of some relief but don't know if taking the methyl prednisone is an option. Please help!

Brief Answer:
Steroids not seem to be helpful

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.

I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

If there hasn't been visible pus on tonsils on doctors examination, then I agree with the diagnoses of Laryngitis which in general are viral infections and do not need antibiotics.

The guidelines do not recommend the use of Methylprednisolone or steroids in general.
What may help, according the recommendations :
-- Voice rest
-- Take plenty of fluids
-- Steam therapy
-- Analgesics. If Tylonol doesn't help you then you can use Ibuprofen 400 mg, 3 times/day after food. It will help with the pain much more then tylonol and will decrease the inflamation.
-- Try to not smoke and avoid acidic foods.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have other questions or concerns. Otherwise please kindly close and rate the answer.
