default
Posted on Mon, 1 Dec 2014
Question: I slipped on a step on Friday and banged my shin on the stair. It hurt but didn't really bruise, until Tuesday night, when the entire shin area became bruised and swollen, and hot to the touch. I now have a bruise around where it hit, and red patches further down, and my foot is swollen. I can walk on it, but Ut is moderately painful from the top of the shin to the foot.

Brief Answer:
It is hematoma and soft tissue injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I came to know that you got injury to your shin and you got hematoma. If you has no fever, then no need to worry much. Hematoma gradually resolved by itself. Thrombophob gel local application three times a day over it (no rubbing) can help in resolving it. Hematoma during its natural course changes colors so no need to worry about red patches. Your foot swelling may be due to keeping foot dependent and walking. Keep foot and leg elevated on pillow during resting time and night time. Don't keep it dependent except during walking. Icing is helpful. Active toe movements are helpful in resolving swelling. You can take analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief.

Vitamin B and C promote healing. You are unlikely to be having fracture but it can be excluded by x-ray. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.
Take care.
