Suggest Treatment For Sleep Apnea, Hypothyroidism And Depression

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014
Question: I think I may have been misdiagnosed... or I am being treated in bits and pieces and not as a whole. I am looking into my medical records and researching for a second opinion. I have medicaid; so I don't have options as to what tests get ran. Anyways, my question: What happens to a person's brain/body if they are placed on Saphris, Cymbalta, Lyrica, and Nuvigil together? or each one - if they don't need it? (misdiagnosed?)

Brief Answer: No damage to the body Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query. I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through. I understand that you had hypothyroidism and sleep apnoea which were not evaluated before you were put on medications for depression. Its a bit unfortunate. But let me tell you that even the patients of hypothyroidism and sleep apnoea who inspite of taking thyroxine and wakalert are still shoiwing depressive symptoms, they need to be given anti-depressants. What I am trying to say is yes other treatments should have been started first, but what you have received is not completely wrong. A person manifesting depressive symptoms (can be irritablity, tiredness, axhautiveness etc) with hypothyroidism or sleep apnoea needs to be treated with the antidepressants as well along with their line of therapy. There is only one thing that is not fitting in my mind is why dod your doctor try you on saphris (asenapine). Its an antipsychotic and has no antidepressant profile. Further coming to the second part of the question, even though you may feel you dont need it, but still looking at the complete picture , I feel that you required antidepressants to benefit you. But even though if you dd not need them, taking them will not affect your brain adversely. The prevalence of Adverse drug reaction in the patient of depression on anti-depressants would be the same as ADR in normal persons on anti-depressants. You need not worry about the medical side-effects of the unwanted therapy. If you are averse to the drug therapies then there is also an option of cognitive behavioural therapy. This therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them. They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help you with your illness. Regarding your TSH levels,if they have come normal then you need not worry about the T3 or T4. They may not be necessary to be done and will not guide your treatment. Hope I am able to answer your concerns. If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you. If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback.
