Suggest Treatment For Sinus Infection While On Amoxicillin

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Nov 2017
Question: I have had a slight cold/ nasal drip for the past week and now have green phlegm from nasal passages. I have been doing nasal irrigation with saline/water solution and taking Sudafed as well as Nasacort nasal spray just the past three days. I think it could be a sinus infection which I have had before. Would like to stay away from any penicillin related antibiotics as I had C-Difficle three months ago after having a double treatment of amoxicillin for a tooth infection. I was put on a 2 time dose of Flagyl for that. Is it possible to maintain my routine of self treatment and avoid having to have an antibiotic prescribed for this?

Brief Answer:
No need for antibiotics now, wait

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

Cold infection is caused by virus, there is no need to start antibiotics.

You say to have noticed green discharge from your sinuses. That is a sign of sinus infection, most probably caused by virus.

It will clear up on its own. Your immune cells are fighting this infection releasing this green substance in nasal discharge.

I think you do not need antibiotics for now. Continue with nasal irrigation as you're doing now, and take oral anti-inflammatory meds like Ibuprofen or paracetamol. Vit.C supplements can help strengthen your immune system.

If there is fever, unbearable headache or any other unusual symptom, get further consultation with your doctor as might require additional prescription antibiotics. For now, you don't need.

Wish fast recovery.
