Suggest Treatment For Shoulder Arthritis In An Elderly Person

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: I am a physically active 58 year old male. I have arthritis in my left shoulder. Numerous X-rays indicate a bone on bone condition. My orthopedic surgeon says I am a candidate for a total shoulder replacement. The problem is that I don't want to have to redo the replacement 15 years from now when I am much older. In addition, I want to continue to do the activities that I enjoy now (i.e. biking, xctry country skiing, weightlifting). I have tried physical therapy, prolotherapy with limited results. Lately the pain is interfering with my sleep. Are there any new treatments besides a total replacement?I feel that once I get a replacement, I can't go back.

Brief Answer:
Joint replacement is the best option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I do understand your problem. Due to arthritis the joint space has remarkably reduced in your case. These changes are due to wear and tear of the joint. Any procedure less than a total replacement cannot bring back the same smooth painless surface of the joint. The local injections of joint lubricants or steroids can bring a temporary relief and delay the surgery by 6 months to years depending on the severity.
It is best to get the joint replaced as it will at least provide you with a painless shoulder movements and a restful sleep.
I hope this answers your query.

is it true that the procedure only lasts 15 years? What will my physical limitations be? Are there no other more durable types of shoulder replacements?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Usually lasts 12-15 years.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The longevity of the replaced joint depends on how well you use it. Doing extreme exertion like skiing and swimming can need a repeat replacement after 12-14 years. It is best to get the best available implant suitable for you for best results. Your orthopedician can suggest the best joint for you after a physical assessment.
Hope my answer is helpful.
