default
Posted on Thu, 30 Apr 2015
Question: I have shingles down my right leg and foot, I am taking gabapentin, 100MG,started out taking 2 capsules 3 times daily (have now increased the dosage to 6 capsules 3 times daily). I am also taking APAP/CODEINE,
one pill, every four to six hours as needed for pain.
I was diagnosed as having shingles by a MD on 02/28/2015.
Have numbness in my right foot and pain in the calf of my right leg below the knee,
when the medicine wears off.
My daughter is in the medical field (Mammography) and suggested I ask you about
Peripheral Neuropaphy.
I appreciate any help you can give.

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and I am sorry you are going through this.

It is called Postherpetic neuralgia and it is the major problem of shingles.
This causes moderate to severe pain on and around the area of skin that was affected by the shingles rash.
The pain is caused from the irritation and damage of the nerve from the herpes virus.
This is very common complication of shingles ,especially in people over 60 years old.

The pain and numbness can be controlled with medications. These symptoms will improve with time and go away after some time.
The time needed for the recovery is unpredictable and it is different is every patient. It may take several weeks or several months to go away.
Meanwhile you need to take the treatment and be patient.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you need further help.

Kind regards.
