Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In The Chest

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Jun 2017
Question: Less than an hour ago, I got this sudden sharp pain in the right side of my chest. Not sure what it may be. Any ideas?

Little more info: I am currently sick, I have asthma but I feel like I have been coughing more since I felt the pain. I am obese, but Ive been told that I am a healthy individual and my heart is fine. Recently diagnosed with anxiety. Lastly, the pain was for a couple of seconds, now it is a burning sensation.

-Not getting worse by breathing
-No pink mucus, sweating, fast breathing, heart rate

Was going to the doctor tomorrow anyway, so if its something I should check, then ill do it then

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Let me first say that your description of the pain is very accurate.

The pain characteristics that you describe, are not typical of any cardiac disorders.

They could be related to musculo-skeletal pain. But considering the fact the fact that you suffer from asthma, pleuritis or a lung disorder can not be excluded either.

Is the pain triggered by body movements of touching? This would go in favor of a musculoskeletal pain.

I recommend trying taking ibuprofen for the pain. If it helps improve your situation, this would be another argument in favor of musculo-skeletal pain. In such case there is no reason to worry about.

But, if the pain persists, I recommend going to the ER for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG
- a chest X ray study
- complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

A nurse checked my lungs about a month ago as well, and she said that there was nothing to be concerned of. Everything seemed to be healthy.

I am allergic to ibuprofen, so I don't want to risk taking that.

As far as the pain, I just lightly pushed/touched the area, and there was a slight increase in burning. Now whenever I breathe in deeply, its slightly more of a burning sensation.

I will talk to my doctor more about it. Any more follow up/speculations as to what it could be?If its important, I will say that this type of sudden sharp pain HAS happened to my left side, and it has been because of musculoskeletal. This is the first time it has happened to my right side

Hello again!

Thank you for the additional information.

Your chest pain seems to be just musculo-skeletal issue. There is nothing to worry about.

If you are not allergic to acetaminophen (Tylenol), I would recommend taking it. It will help improve your situation.

But, it doesn't seem to be anything concerning.

So, relax and don't worry about it!

Wishing all the best,

Dr. Iliri
