Suggest Treatment For Severe Upper GI Pain And Soreness
Question: Good afternoon.I am a white male; 56 years old;5' 9";225pounds. I am experiencing Upper GI pain or soreness(below chest and above belly button). I would say upper to mid-stomach.Started abruptly on Tuesday morning around 7:00am.(May 24th).. I have suffered with GERD since college and it is generally well controlled with Nexium and diet. I have been taking Nexium daily since Feb. due to excessive phlegm,cough and the feeling of something in back of throat. My long time ENT told me those were GERD symptoms and recommended daily Nexium. That helped significantly.My ENT did a scope of throat to adam's apple and throat was fine.This problem is new. I can't remember an episode like this. I have been busy with work and caring for an elderly parent. Fair amount of daily stress but nothing really new for me. Nexium and Maalox does not seem to work. As you do suffer from GERD for a very long time, and the area you have mentioned seems to be stomach, it is the right time to have a gastroscopy done. Such symptoms can be caused by peptic ulcer. Its the first thing to be ruled out.
Peptic ulcer pain is usually dull, not well localized. Can get worse after foods intake. Usually gets more intense in the night. Lack of appetite or nausea can be present.
Please consult gastrologist with it.

Thank you for your response.First,is there anything I can take for the stomach soreness I am experiencing? Nexium and liquid antacid is not helping much.Secondly, if it turns out to be peptic ulcer what is the likely treatment for it?Thank you.

We do this test to make sure there is no cancer. GERD can lead to permanent changes in the esophagus (Barrets esophagus) what significantly rises the risk of esophageal cancer. This must be checked with gastroscopy as well.
