Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. The neck spine is made of 7 small bones aligned vertically and there are small cushion like discs between the bones called intervertebral discs. There are small foramen on either side of the discs between two bones and nerves pass through these foramina. With increasing age, these discs get degenerated and there is pressure on the nerves when they pass through the foramina. This causes pain which can be felt in the neck and hands.

2. It is possible that your disc between bones C 5 and C 6 is degenerated and causing pressure on the exiting nerve roots. This will be seen better on MRI scan and it will also show if there is pressure changes on spinal cord. Please send your MRI scan report when you get it.

3. The treatment is first by doing physiotherapy and avoiding stress on the neck spine. Please do not carry more than 5 kg weight with your hands and avoid turning your neck suddenly. Use a firm pillow and hard mattress to sleep.

4. If there is continuing pain then you might take pain relief ointment and medicines.

5. For severe pain, patients are treated with steroid injections to reduce pain or surgery to release the pressure on nerve.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
