Suggest Treatment For Severe Scalp Itching

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: Good morning Doctors. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (Secondary Progressive) about 15 years ago.
Over the last few months, I have developed intense scalp itching. I saw a dermatologist, who examined my scalp and he said he found absolutely nothing wrong with it. No signs of seborhea. or any other scalp disease.

He gave me samples of Luxiq, Synalar and OluxE. He also suggested washing my hair with olive oil. I have tried all of these prescriptions, and other than very greasy hair, I have had no relief. My main prescription for MS is
Copaxone (Glatimer Acetate Injection 20/mg/ml), which I inject once a day.

Would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions to remedy this scalp itching!

Brief Answer:
kindly get the following investigations done

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to ask the doctor.
I understand your concern.
Your doctor has given you betamethasone and flucinolone containing medications. These are the main remedies for most of the scalp diseases. If no improvement is found with these medications, it is most likely due to following possibilities-
1) Antifungals have not been added. Maximum scalp diseases respond to combination of topical steroids and antifungal shampoos or lotions.
2) Systemic disease- like Diabetes Mellitus, Thyroid dysfunction, Anaemia, Liver or kidney disease may result in itch involving any part of body and even the whole body.
So I would like to advise you following investigations :
1 ) Hemoglobin
2) Blood sugar levels
3) Thyroid profile
4) Kidney function tests
5) Liver function tests

Your treating doctor will know about these tests. Kindly get back to me with the report of the above mentioned investigations.

I hope it helps.
