Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain Due To Chronic Constipation

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: Hello doctor,
As stated in my history I suffer from chronic constipation with unknown cause. As of today it has been thirteen days without a bowel movement. Enemas, laxatives and stool softeners have not shown any results. I XXXXXXX been disimpacted twice in this time period, neither time resulting in a movement after or a relief of symptoms. I am severely bloated and in quite significant pain. My abdomen feels hard, tight and is (despite my already significant girth) visibly very distended. Three days ago I stopped being able to pass gas. Since then my discomfort and pain have vastly increased.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Gastroenterologist for colonoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

Reading your medical history, there a few things that need to be carefully considered. Diabetes on its own, especially if poorly controlled could lead to poor bowel movements. Lack of exercise /inadequate mobility could also explain chronic constipation. Drinking much and exercise could help. If these have not helped, and considering the drugs, duration of the condition and the drug you have taken already deserve in my opinion, a keen attention.

I strongly suggest you get a colonoscopy done. Common causes of such chronic constipation like colon cancer / tumors and polyps must be excluded first. Your gastroenterologist would be most helpful.

While waiting to book the appointment with the gasyroenterologist, water, fruits, vegetables, fibres and exercise would be useful. You could also associate enemas.

I honestly think the opinion of your gastroenterologist is compelling at this point in time. Thanks and kind regards.

A proper evaluation and control of your blood glucose is also very helpful.
