default
Posted on Sat, 23 Sep 2017
Question: I have neck pain that is severe at times that goes away and becomes severe in my back on the left side above my shoulder blade, when that pain subsides it goes to my left elbow area also severe. My left pointer finger is constantly numb. My doctor thought it may be carpal tunnel. It is aggravated by holding my iPad with my left palm while playing free cell for long periods of time.

Brief Answer:
Multifactorial. Cervical spondylosis as well as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns.

Your back pain could be due to cervical spondylosis or could be due to muscle spasm, thus causing the pain. Hot compress should provide relief. The vicious cycle of pain and spasm needs to be broken and I would insist you to take paracetamol or acetaminophen 500 mg two tablets together twice or thrice daily for next 3 days. This should ease the problem and make it go away. If it does not, I would insist you to get a X Ray of Cervical spine (AP and lateral) done and to see a physical therapist with the reports. Based on the findings he would be able to demonstrate to you proper exercises that should provide relief.

Carpal tunnel syndrome could be present. A NCV test (nerve conduction velocity) test can help in its confirmation.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
