Question: Hi I have a problem with diarrhoea in the mornings after I have had breakfast.I changed my diet to just toast and Vegemite with a little butter I used to have yoghurt and 1 Wheatbix big no no after 30 minutes diarrhoea that's why I changed to toast. Some mornings it's okay, but this morning the same diarrhoea.I have always had sensitivity but in the last 2 months it's getting worse.I have been to a doctor and thought it might be diet related but I've run out of options to what to eat in the morning.I have had accidents after lunch if I eat to much fatty foods like cheese, but general after 10 ish I'm fine.I do like a glass or two of wine at night we eat possible a bit to late at night 7.30 to 8 light meals as we have had to change our diet because of my husband having pre diebetis.I don't have any pain but I do have cramping and gurgling after I have eaten at times no blood.I have the home bowel screening done ones a year no problems. Can you suggest anything for me.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having trouble with diarrhea.

I am wondering, IF the problem is related to diet, if it is truly a reaction to something you ate for breakfast, or if your body was going to have diarrhea from something you ate the night before and was triggered by breakfast. There is a natural process called the gastro-colic reflex, which is why people sometimes feel the need to have a bowel movement after they eat breakfast: food in the stomach causes the colon to move. So it's possible that the problem isn't breakfast but what you ate before. Although if you have noticed that it increases in response to certain breakfast foods and not others, then it may be the breakfast food.

I will give you a list of foods that are usually well tolerated, but if you are still having trouble, best to go see your doctor. Even if you had a normal colonoscopy, it's possible you have a bowel infection or a food intolerance such as to dairy or wheat.

When diarrhea has gone on for more than 3 weeks, it's time to evaluate what might be going on with a CBC, stool studies, and liver function test. Also a test for celiac disease (blood test). And serum amylase and lipase levels. If you've traveled at all in the recent past, tell your doctor about this, as he/she will want to check stool test for ova and parasites.

Foods that you might try for now:
apple sauce
rice
bananas
chicken (without much oil/fat or spices added)
turkey
fish (without oil added)
sweet potatoes
white potatoes
well cooked vegetables of any kind
small amount oils (canola, olive, coconut)

For now, avoid eating wheat products and dairy, and fruit juices. Give this 2-3 weeks and see if it helps. But also make an appointment with your doctor to have this problem evaluated. Be sure to also tell your doctor about the problem you have occasionally had with fatty food (or maybe dairy food?) later in the day as this may be a malabsorption problem.

I hope this information helps get you started. If you are willing, please let me know how you are doing after you have seen your doctor and had some of the testing done.
