Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea

Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: Hi my son has had severe diarrhea since4pm-10pm yesterday. All he ate was a carrot at 3pm and 2 pieces of toast with butter at6pm. He hasn't had anything to eat this morning and has a temperature of 35.1. I've been giving him hydralite since 8am today. He's only had diarrhea once so far today. I'm mainly concerned about the low temperature. I've just checked his temperature again after 2hrs and it's 35.3.

Brief Answer:
The low temperature could be a sign of dehydration. Give ORS. Visit ER

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the attached image. The mainstay of treatment for the diarrhea would be to give ORS (oral rehydration solution) or Hydralite frequently. If the replenishment of salt and water is equal to or more than the amount lost, dehydration would not result. But it worries me since you mention that the temperature is low. Dehydration often presents with cold extremities and that is not a very good sign. Try giving plenty of Hydralite in the next hour or so and if the situation does not improve, please visit the emergency room of a hospital without further delay.

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
Continue hydrating the child. Give nutritive diet.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Since I do not know the weight of your child, it is hard for me to comment whether 400 ml is adequate for him. But please continue to give Hydralite frequently not caring about the amount you give. The lost fluids and salts need to be replenished. The paleness is not unusual and I would not worry about it. A healthy regular diet with plenty of fluids to drink should make things fine soon.
