Question: Hi Doctor, I started out with sinus, cold and cough almost twenty days ago and the cough was bad. I thought it might be viral and after about ten days my doctor prescribed a zpac in case it is bacterial. It got better but once the space was done the cough returned. I went back she said I had a little wheezing, lungs seemed inflamed and wet cough with mucus was bad so she has put me on prednisone two tablets a day, inhaler and prescription cough medicine. I started prednisone yesterday. But the cough was really bad last night limiting my ability to sleep and the pain in the lung area seems to be growing. My doctor,s office is closed. Should I just continue the prednisone take rest and fluids? When should I , if at all seek additional medical help or go to a hospital? No fever by the way.

Brief Answer:
Continue prednisolone. Take plenty of fluids.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Sinusitis is an infection of sinues, the air pockets contained in our skull. It is most often caused due to viral although occasionally there is a superadded bacterial infection present. Antibiotics or any other medicines cannot reach the sinuses properly and sinuses have a poor blood supply. Antibiotics may relieve the superadded bacterial infections, but the unresolved underlying infection may flare up subsequently. Taking steam inhalation can provide relief as it helps in opening up the openings of the sinuses that have been blocked by thickened mucus. Water in form of vapour will reach deep inside and will help in dilute the thickened mucus.

You should simply continue prednisolone as directed. Take rest and plenty of fluids to drink.

You need not worry. Hopefully it would be cured soon. You would need to seek additional medical help in case of respiratory distress or increased wheezing.

Feel free to write back.
