Question: Hi, i am a 49 year old female. I have a severe cough ....started out as a head cold last Thursday , mild temperature , then I lost my voice over the weekend followed by an awful nights sleep last night. , with coughing keeping me up all night.today I have been coughing to the point of dry wretching, feel flushed and don't have a lot of energy . The coughing is the biggest problem ....and causes me a lot of pain. I have a headache on top of the coughing which I assume is a result of constant coughing. Any ideas what I can do to stop the coughing. .

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation along with some antiallergic would provide relief.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully throug the details and understand your concerns. Under normal circumstances we are not even aware of the drainage of our respiratory secretions. When these secretions become thickened, they become cough or phlegm and we need to cough it out forcibly. When it becomes even drier, you get dry cough. So the solution is to dilute it back. You have to take plenty of water to drink. On the other hand you need to take steam inhalation. Water in the form of vapour will reach deep inside and would gradually dilute the cough and would provide relief. The solution that you are looking for is steam inhalation a few times a day. Alongside, take some antiallergic like cetirizine. It should be helpful. Please be patient. You should see the results in a few days.
Hope that helps.

Glad to be of service

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Of all people who get whooping cough, it is only 7% who are adults. So, although the chances of it being whooping cough is quite less, I cannot state the possibility as zero. But in my opinion, you need not worry about whooping cough. Take the measures mentioned and you should be fine.
