Suggest Treatment For Severe Colitis, Abdominal Pain Associated With Diarrhea

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Aug 2015
Question: My past medical history includes a cholecystectomy, partial gastrectomy, sigmoid colectomy for severe colitis. For the past 3-4 days I have been unable to eat more than one bite or one sip of water without having moderate to severe diffuse abdominal pain associated with diarrhea. I have been taking dicyclamine (sp?) for IBS and usually it controls the problem, but now is not helping at all. In addition whenever I attempt to eat anything my nose starts running and I get nausea. Could this be a simple summer flu (not febrile, but have all over body aches)? Can I just ride this out without calling my internal medicine MD?

Brief Answer:
Please consult your doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It does not seem to be a flu. As you have had 3 major abdominal surgeries, for sure you have adhesions. In some cases adhesions can cause partial or even complete bowels obstruction.
Diarrhea, nausea, bloating, abdominal pain (especially cramping) are typical symptoms of such obstruction.
So I suggest you to consult your doctor. If you havent had all this surgeries, waiting would be a good idea. But in your case, it seems to risky.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
