Suggest Treatment For Schizophrenia

Question: Hi. Our daughter is presently in a Mental Health facility for Schitzophrenia and the doctor has her on Seroquil. Both my husband and I think that she is ready to come home but the doctor is keeping her there because she keeps experiencing psychosis. He just increased her medicine to 600 mg. last night hoping the voices will go away. We think if she gets home and out of that environment, she will get better and that she doesn't need that high of dosage.

Brief Answer:
it depends on her and your will and country's law, you can bring her home

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us.

I can understand your concern.

Schizophrenia is one of the significant disorder among psychiatric illnesses. It requires regular medicines.

If your daughter as well as you both as parents want to bring her to home, it is your right. Until and unless she is harmful to herself or others, no one should keep her indoor without will of her or that of guardians.

If her main complaint is hearing of voices, old typical anti psychotic medicine like trifluoperazine or haloperidol is the good option in my opinion.

Seroquel is good drug to control psychosis but 600 mg of course can cause sedation and weight gain in long run.

Just discuss with her doctor what you think, what I suggested and understand what the mental health laws of your country suggests.I even also believe for treatment in home environment unless problem is severe and patient is not ready to take medicines.

Hope this answers your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
