Suggest Treatment For Scalp Hematoma After A Head Injury

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, I fell and hit my head in my house 9 days ago and went unconcious. My husband took me to the ER, I had a catscan, everything is ok, but the huge lump (soft) in all colours doesn't want to shrink. It is getting frustrating, does it really take that much patience to let it heal or is there some blood or whatever that could be removed. I also got misleading advices from friends etc., some say keep it on ice, others say put a very warm cloth on it. Please advise.
Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Masterly inactivity is all that is required

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms,

The lesion is likely to be scalp hematoma( collection of blood in the layers of scalp).
When hematoma is formed usually the blood clotts, over period of time it slowly liquifies and slowly gets reabsorbed back. The various color which you are seeing is due to release of blood pigments.
As the scalp is highly vascular(has rich blood supply), the amount of blood that could present in hematoma following injury could be large. This could take a much longer time to get absorbed. It may take 3- 4 weeks sometimes to get reabsorbed depending on size of the hematoma.

I would advise you masterly inactivity. There is no need of applying anything. The mother nature will take care of it and it will get absorbed. Surgical inscision and drainage of Hematoma is not advisable . Only indication where it is drained is when Surgeon feels the hematoma is infected.

Leave it alone and it should be fine

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Take Care
