Question: Hello Doc,
My Name is XXXX. For the past 2 years, i have been suffering from continuous running nose, sneezing. I have met several doctors and conducted several tests for allergy skin prick test, blood test, etc. In the skin prick test the results were completely normal and I did not have any allergies. But still I am taking / I have to take anti histamines every day. I m taking a tablet called Levosiz-M. Even if I dont take it one day the next day the sneezing and running nose gets worse with nose block and everything. How do you call this in your medical terms? I am taking this tablet for past 2 years still there is no help. What is the cause and solution for this? I am afraid that i have to take this for my lifetime. Please help me here. Thanks in advance!

Brief Answer:
You are having allergic rhinitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Even though your skin allergy testing is negative, your symptoms are favoring the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis only.
Another strong supportive evidence for this is, you are fine with Levasiz M and on stopping it you become symptomatic.
Levosiz M is having levocetrizine and montelukast.
Levocetrizine is anti histamine and montelukast is anti allergic drug.
So you are having allergic rhinitis irrespective of skin allergy testing results.
The cause for your symptoms is allergy. Allergy is inflammatory process which is activated on exposure of allergen.
So the best and first treatment of this is complete avoidance of allergen if possible.
So I advice you to wear mask.
Allergen can be anything like dust, pollens, smoke, fur etc.
So better to use mask to avoid allergen.
Recent guidelines on treatment of allergic rhinitis recommends use of intranasal corticosteroid and antihistamine.
Nasal sprays are available for this.
They are now considered as first line of treatment for allergic rhinitis, even before oral antihistamine and anti allergic.
Initially, you will require both nasal spray and oral drug.
Once your symptoms are controlled, we can taper down nasal spray and oral drug.
Since all these drugs are prescribed medicines, you need doctor's prescription for these.
So consult ENT doctor and discuss all these and start appropriate treatment.
Regarding the usage of the medication for lifetime, I cannot say with 100% surety at this stage. It all depends on how your body responds to this line of medication.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
