Question: My husband broke ribs 3-7 and separated his shoulder. He continues to have shooting pain into his armpit. His injuries are to his right side

He was hospitalized and the lungs were not involved. He did have some fluid buildup in his lungs which has subsided. He is using breathing machine multiple times an hour.

Brief Answer:
There will be some pain till the ribs heal

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
Unfortunately he will continue to have some pain till the broken ribs unite and heal. If his chest has not been strapped to reduce the movements which give rise to the pain, strapping the chest would be helpful.
It is also noted that he has a high blood pressure and edema of the feet. These can be due to the side effect of the anti inflammatory medicines he may be taking for pain relief. These retain salt and water and may lead to edema and elevated blood pressure.
If he is able to reduce/ avoid NSAIDs , it would be helpful for blood pressure and edema. Also reducing salt and water intake would help. He may also require a diuretic which would make him pass the salt and water out through urine. He may use other groups of pain relievers which do not retain salt and water.
Do get back to me if you have more queries.
Best wishes,
