Suggest Treatment For Restless Leg Syndrome

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 8 yrs ago. Started on Azilect immediately and have experienced very few of the conditions of the disease since beginning that Medication. I did develop severe restless leg syndrome and night time leg cramps. My neurologist then prescribed Neupro patch, starting at the 2mg dose and worked up to the 8mg dose, which I am now taking and have for the past 3-4 years. I found instant success with the patch with immediate relief from RLS and decreased muscle cramping. However, in the past several weeks both conditions have returned and I am awakened several time each night with the severe muscle cramps. I plan on making an appointment with my neurologist this week as the cramps seem to be increasing in frequency and intensity. Any suggestions? I am an active 74 year old male rancher. I engage in physical work on a daily basis for 6-8 hours and most people I meet would never guess I am a Parkinson patient! Thank you for your information. XXXXXXX XXXX YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer:
Get investigated and take treatment as advised after consulting your doc

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Rest less leg syndrome can be managed by investigating for any iron deficiency by advising iron profile and supplementation of iron if found deficient.
Pramipexole can also be used as it is effective in parkinsons as well as rest less leg syndrome.
For parkinsons other medications are also available and can be started if disability is hampering day to day life.
Vitamin B 12 and vitamin D levels should be checked for any deficiency for muscular pain.
Continue patches till advice from neurologist and discuss these medications and investigation.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

Wishing you good health.
