Suggest Treatment For Renal Cell Carcinoma Bone Metastases

Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: My father aged 79 has been diagnosed with "renal cell carcinoma with bonemets" and has just undergone palliative radiation therapy for his right femur which made him immobile about a month ago. Chemotherapy and surgical interventions do not seem to be an option in the opinion of the learned doctor treating him who is exceptionally patient and extra ordinarily compassionate. My father has undergone right radical nephrectomy in november 1990 (almost 25 years ago). He takes veltam f daily for his prostate enlargement - assumed based on PSA and free PSA results. He has also been prescribed thyrocin 12.5 and atocor (one each everyday) since two days. In addition he takes some laxatives like kayam churna and unienzyme. I have consulted two more doctors (Physicians to find out if he can be given some medicines or supplements to increase his overall health) but they also told that what is being done is the best course available. I am enclosing the PET CT scan and bone scan reports with this question which will show that the other areas where it has spread has not been treated - Again well explained by the treating doctor. I researched on the internet and found that there is something called as internal palliative radiation therapy that requires certain radio isotopes of radium and strontium to be injected and these will against all the locations where the malignancy has developed. Unfortunately for me the respected doctor treating him told that such treatment is not available. My request is to let me know if there is any such facility anywhere in the country or even nearby asian countries and how much will it cost. I would be very grateful for an early reply as I want my father to be as comfortable as he can be at this ripe old age. If possible, please also let me know if the doctor treating him has not told me something to avoid advancing the imminent trauma in the family.

Brief Answer:
You can rely on what your doctor ays

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I am sorry to know about the condition of your father but let me inform you that unless treated early with complete excision before any spread occurs, all cancers have the same fate and eventually leads to death. Since metastasis has already occurred, there is not much that you can do other than prolonging his agony. You are lucky that you have a compassionate doctor who is doing the best that can be done. I do not think that anything more needs to be done.

I am not aware of the isotopes applicable but such a treatment is indeed available. I am not aware if it is available in XXXXXXX But the cost ranges from lakhs to crore for a 6 month course. Tata Medical Centre, XXXXXXX is perhaps the best place to guide you in this regard. But I would suggest that rather than trying to prolong his life give him the quality of life for the short duration that he has to live.

Hope that helps.
