Question: Hi, I am 51 years old. I work as an RN and lead a busy lifestyle. I have recently noticed that I feel like I'm aspirating when eating certain foods. I have even awakened during the night twice feeling like I was aspiRating on my own saliva. I have no other health issues. What is going on?

Thanks for your question on HCM.

The symptoms you are describing suggest Reflux disease more.
in our body wind pipe is situated just above food pipe. So any obstruction in food pipe leads to reflux of content s in wind pipe and this is known as aspiration. If the obstruction is small than reflux and aspiration occurs only with solid food. Liquids will pass. But if the obstruction is large ,even liquids also give reflux and aspiration. Recurrent aspiration in wind pipe cause Aspiration Pneumonitis, so this should be evaluated in depth .

There are many causes for these. Broadly speaking benign and malignant.
Since your age is also above 50, I advice you to consult Gastroenterologist and discuss these things. You may need upper GI scopy and some radiological investigation.
