Question: Hi doctor, my 18 month old girl is suffering from high fever since last night. We gave her a dosage of Crocin which subsided the fever for some hours. She got the fever back and is now very cranky. She also had cough and cold for past 5 days but it went ok since yesterday morning. Now she got this fever since yesterday evening. We are thinking of giving her Meftal P and Relent for cough and cold. Please advice...

Brief Answer:
You can give Meftal P and Relent

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Such symptoms are usually caused due to certain viral infections which generally does not show up in a routine blood test. Antibiotics are ineffective in the treatment of viral infections. Irrespective of the use of antibiotics, such infections may last for 5-10 days. Relent Syr. contains a mucolytic along with an antiallergic and can be given. If fever is present, it needs to be controlled by the use of crocin or paracetamol and tepid sponging. You can also give Meftal P which is more effective than crocin in reducing temperature. But it is a prescription medication and you might need to get it prescribed by your doctor. Saline nasal drops like Nasoclear may be given in case of nasal block. Giving steam inhalation or use of humidifiers should be helpful by helping in diluting the cough. I would not suggest any other medication.

Please be patient. But if the child grows lethargic or develops wheezing, you would have to take her to a pediatrician. Otherwise I would not really worry.

Hope that helps.
