Question: Hi, I have a general enquiry about a 2 years old child having recurrent acute otitis media and she has been requested to have grommet insertion.
Q1) Would there be any other ear complication arising from the grommet insertion?
Q2)Would grommet insertion resolve the otitis media and the child would not have otitis media again?

Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,
1) Grommets are largely very safe. There will be no other complication arising from grommet use. In the beginning there will be ear discharge. As the drum heals the grommet will get expelled in to the ear canal after 8-10 months. Till then ear should be absolutely dry, water should never enter the ear. Very Rarely grommets leave a permanent ear drum perforation.
2) Grommet insertion will definitely bring down the number of attacks of acute otitis media.
3) Otitis media does not frequently cause complications. In our age of antibiotics most ear infections resolve with antibiotics. Rarely we see mastoiditis (commonest complication), mastoid abscess, meningitis (second most common), destruction of ossicular chain, permanent drum perforation.
