Question: My mum has rectal cancer. She has just had 25 sessions of radiotherapy with chemotherapy they are now waiting until November/December before operation. Is this normal it seems to long to me and I am panicking. Do you see my mum's cancer be early stages? I worry about it spreading before surgery. I have no CT or MRI report only a clinic letter can you please help me and try to reassure me that my mum can be cured. Thanks

Brief Answer:
Looks to be an early stage and no worry for spread

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
I can understand the anxiety and the stress that you and your family must be going through.
As per the three reports/letters you have posted this seems to be an early stage cancer of rectum for which 25 sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy have already been done and these must have already taken care of cancer well.
It would outside the prerogative to advise about the timing of surgery as a Team of Specialists are already taking care of her and must have advised the best possible way to cure her.
Do not worry about the spread before surgery as Radio-chemotherapy has already been given.
I would advise your Mother and you to take care of the medical problems well so that she becomes fit before surgery and also loose as much weight as possible to have best possible results and ideal colostomy.
Review CT/MRI/ colonoscopy would help to have recent staging and that has already mentioned in the letter.

I hope this answers your query.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

So my mum's cancer won't spread in between time waiting for operation I am so scared. Mum has a lot of bladder and bowel incontinence at the minute will it settle down now the chemo and radium has stopped? What stage do you think it is please I am worried it has gone in lymph nodes

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Only the fresh CT/MRI and Colonoscopy can tell the present stage.
I have mentioned above that Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy might have taken care of cancer well so the risk of spread may not be there; but it is the fresh investigations that alone can tell the facts.
Bladder and bowel incontinence could have been due to Radiotherapy and may get a control over time.

Brief Answer:
No need to panic

Detailed Answer:
No need to panic as your Mother is already under the care of a Team of Specialists in the field and my opinion depended on the letter you have posted.
Please get into consultation with the caretaker Doctors to get detailed position at the moment to get the actual picture and the plan of management.
Please worry more for her medical conditions and obesity should be reduced to get the best possible results.

When can mum start to mix and go out again. whilst she was have chemo tabs we were told to avoid mixing
doctor
Answered by Dr. T Chandrakant (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Wait for one more month

Detailed Answer:
Since Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy reduces the immunity of the patient, mixing with others is best avoided to avoid infection.
Wait for at least one more month, then shall decide.
