Suggest Treatment For Rashes On The Elbow And Bumps On Skin Of A Baby

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: My 9 months old baby is developing some skin rash in the inner side of her elbow (pic attached) there are some red spots along with tiny bumps in the skin. However I am applying calamine lotion but wanted to understand if this is something I need to worry about. Can you please suggest if there is any cream I can apply for this. Also can you please let me know if there is any mosquito repellent cream that is safe for the baby? As I feel this rashes are mainly due to insect bite (though I am not absolutely sure).

Thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
it is intertrigo

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Welcome to HealthcareMagic,

I have gone through your question & photograph and understand your concern.

It appears that your baby is suffering from intertrigo. It is an inflammation of body folds and adjacent area. Superadded bacterial and fungal infection complicates the picture.
It is not a serious condition and need not to worry, although treatment is needed.
Cream containing antifungal & antibiotic helps in healing fast.
Keeping the area of the intertrigo dry and exposed to the air can help prevent recurrences.
This type of rash is not due to insect bite. Papular urticaria which occurs more commonly on the exposed part of the body, limbs, face and lower back.

All mosquito repellents claim to be dermatologically safe and does not induce any adverse skin reactions, But these should not be applied over infant skin as stratum corneum is not fully developed in infants. It is better to use full sleeve cotton cloths and mosquito net.

Hope this will help you.
Thanks

Hello Doctor,

Thanks for your advice.
in the mean time I was going through some internet documents and come to know that lactose in outside milk can cause this kind of rashes also. So just wanted to inform you that 7 days back I gave my baby outside milk (on doctors advice). Since then she has been having tummy upset and this kind of rashes (on her thigh and hand).

Also wanted to ask you if you can prescribe some cream containing antifungal & antibiotic which will help her in healing fast.

thanks and Regards

Brief Answer:
Need skin allergy test to confirm

Detailed Answer:
welcome again,

Lactose in formula milk can cause lactose allergy and intolerance both.
Baby develops immediate facial flushing and rashes. Baby also develops watery eyes and stuffy nose.
Delayed reaction occurs in the form of eczema.

Family history of food allergy and allergy skin test can diagnose lactose allergy.
In skin allergy test small amount of the milk protein in inserted just under the surface of the child's skin with a needle. If a raised spot called a wheal emerges, the child may have a milk allergy. You can start hypoallergenic milk formula if the test became positive.

Micogent cream contains both antibiotic and antifungal and is free from steroid, but you may need prescription for getting this.

Hope this will clear your facts.
Thanks.

Hi Doctor,

Now I am really scared and worried. have given her outside packet milk for 3 days only (1st day 150 ml and 100 ml for the next 2 days and then stopped completely).

I will do the test ...

just wanted to know if eczema is curable or a permanent disorder in the skin?

Thanks and regards

Brief Answer:
Not permanent, easily controllable

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome again,

Eczema is easily controllable disease with topical ointments and creams. Sometimes it requires oral medication.

As you have given only three days outside milk then it is Very Less chances to lactose allergy, because in acute condition facial flushing, watery eyes and stuffy nose occurs. So dont get scared.

Tummy upset generally occurs in many babies initially but it settles down with time. I will advise you to again start the milk, if allergy again occurs then go for test.

Hope this will help you.
Thanks.
