Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: My son is in XXXXXXX and got a rash on his feet and akles. Went to a pharmacist who gave him a cream for scabies. I will try to attach photos so you could see and tell me whether this is in fact scabies, if so what treatment he needs, if not - what could it be?

so I have these insect bites or rash all over my feet. Could you ask you doctor friend or that website what they think? a pharmacist here in town said it could be scabies and gave me a cream for it.
so far the bites or rash or whatever are just on my feet and ankles... one or two higher up on one leg.
please let me know!

My son is in XXXXXXX on his own, no family with him. He sleeps in hostels, so he could have picked something up there. He moves from place to place every two-three days.

Brief Answer:
Mosquito bite rather than scabies

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I have reviewed the Images.

I would like to keep a likely possibility of mosquito bite rather than scabies.
Insect bite is the likely possibility because these rashes are on exposed/ uncovered body sites i.e ankles and feet which are accessible to mosquitos

Unlike mosquito bites, Scabies usually cause itchy rashes on sites like abdomen, upper thighs, buttocks and arms etc which are mostly covered.

I suggest that he applies a topical moderately potent steroid e.g fluticasone propionate 0.05% Or Triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% Or mometasone furoate 0.1% cream Or ointment, twice daily for a few days.
You may try and procure it from your local pharmacist, if one of these is available OTC

An OTC Oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10 mg once daily will provide him symptomatic relief from itching.

Regards
