Suggest Treatment For Rash In Side Of Upper Legs

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: Hello! I was on here this past week asking about a rash on the posterior side of my upper leg/thigh. I did hot yoga last friday night and then jogged the next morning on the treadmill slowly for 20 min. After that i took a shower and my skin in this area was burning as if it were raw but it isnt. It has not really improved throughout the week despite having antibiotic cream to put on it having been seen by a dermatologist. I am pretty worried about it as now i can see pinkish spots as well that look like raw skin but isnt. I am worried that this is something indicative of a more serious condition such as a blood clot, lupus, leukemia, lymphoma as i have read that red rashes and spots are symptoms of those things. Im a worrier! I have also had pain in my legs such as some cramping and achiness periodically between my big toe and other toe but i dont know if that is related or not. Thanks so much!

Brief Answer:
Still feel this is friction; would like to help you rule it out

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I went through your query here, and the others posted previously as well. In one such previous query I viewed the image that you posted of the affected region.

In my opinion this is most probably due to the friction caused from the dressing worn while jogging and possibly even due to the friction caused by lying on the mat during hot yoga. Possibly because of this the skin in the region has become extremely irritated, resulting in the rash developed.

But just to be on the safer side, I would still recommend two tests called:

+Blood coagulation profile
+ESR

These tests will help confirm this to be simply due to the friction, and help rule out any underlying conditions. But honestly, in my opinion this looks more like friction, and I would recommend ice packs and rest without any further friction. Please also wear lose comfortable clothes for at least the next 2-3 weeks.

If you are comfortable, please do attach a clear and more recent image, not the same old one attached in another query. I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.

These pictures are both from this morning. Hopefully it is from friction i would just expect it to be a lot better by now as it has been a week now. Im just worried about this...why would you suggest those two tests bc there is a possibility it could be something more sinister? What are those tests looking for? Sorry...im a worrier. How long do you think this should take to go away? I am hoping it is only from friction as well. Like i said it burns at times but otherwise nothing else. It looks a lot better when i wake up in the morning and then gets redder. The pink spots are a little concerning as well. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Suggested tests only for your satisfaction, nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

I am sorry, I do not see any images attached to our discussion yet. Please do attach them, or you can email them to:

Friction wounds are called irritant or contact dermatitis and at times take a while to subside and recover, but it is very important you avoid further friction to help promote healing during this period.

I only suggested those two tests to help you feel reassured by the results that this is not anything serious. Those tests look for clotting abnormalities and inflammation that can be caused by certain conditions that can cause such a presentation. By evaluating their values, I will be able to predict the cause for such a presentation and in turn put all your worried to rest. :)

The fact that it burns at times also supports the diagnosis of a friction wound. The wound is large, and so in my opinion it should take about 2-3 weeks. Do not worry about it too much ma'am, give it enough time and opportunity to heal and if at all (highly unlikely) it doesn't then make sure you write back to me in 2 weeks time informing me about the same.

But for now, get those tests done if you have access to a laboratory or diagnostic center and write back to me with the results.

Best wishes ma'am and do not worry at all. :)

Hi ma'am.

Yes, I did receive the image ma'am.

Thank you so much for attaching it. It will also help with comparison to an image of the same region I would appreciate you would attach in a week or two.

But for now, it does not look like anything serious ma'am. :)

I do not see any cause for concern, and would love for you to keep me in the loop so I can see how you are doing from time to time.

Lots and lots of luck. :)
