Suggest Treatment For Protrusion On The Top Of The Feet

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: Hi...I am inquiring about a protrusion on the top of both my feet. It feels like a bone, or maybe calcification. Pressure on it brings on pain; sometimes too much standing or walking will bring on pain. Sometimes the pain is such that I hobble along. I have been told it is arthritis, and I just have to "learn to live with it" by my podiatrist. That doesn't seem like a good answer to me. Some days, like today, it started hurting the moment I got out of bed. sometimes the pain is throughout the night. some days I have no pain.

Brief Answer:
These are bunions...If you can’t cope, then maybe surgery would help!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these protrusions and all the inconveniences this has caused you. I have reviewed the information fully and this is suggestive of bunions. While treatment entails conservative measures like adapting your footwear, extreme cases are managed surgically. If you think the severity of your symptoms makes every day use of pain medications, footwear, pads, etc not good enough, then let your doctor consider surgery to address this. Ask the orthopedic surgeon about this specifically and hear what he has to say!

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Bunions do not occur on the top of the foot. I know what bunions are. I told you I had gone to my podiatrist and he knows what a bunion is and isn't. these protrusions are on the TOP of the foot, in the middle of the top of the foot. I just looked up "bunions" and verified that they occur on the side of the foot near the big toe. I had a bunion removed once. This is not a good answer.

Hi,

is it possible to upload an image of what you are talking about. I probably concluded they meant your big toes and it turns out not to be that. Am sorry for that.

I will like to review an image to make sure am addressing the right issue. To upload an image, simply click on the link to upload a file and follow the instructions. If this proves difficult, please send the image by mail to YYYY@YYYY and request that the image should be uploaded to your query.

I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience and promise to be back as soon as I hear from you. Until then, I wish you well.

I do not have an image to upload. I described it....a round raised bump on top of each foot...the right one is bigger that the left. It protrudes about a quarter of an inch at its highest point. It is painful to walk. It probably is arthritis. I am wondering what can be done about it???!!!

Brief Answer:
Pain medications will be the way to go if this is arthritis!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

With no images, it becomes difficult to tell what exactly this is. True it could be arthritis but the exact cause needs to be identified. A common cause of depositions under the skin of joints is gout. However, there is no way to raise this suspicion without seeing actual images and doing some laboratory tests for uric acid levels.

If it is for real arthritis, we cannot go operating on all the feet. It certainly means drug and lifestyle changes will be the way to go. Am glad you will soon be seeing an orthopedic and most certainly he will have the chance to see these bumps as well as examine them. I also know the medical corps would stand by you to identify and bring the best possible solutions to your plight.

I wish you well.
