Question: I have a problem where I feel like there is glob of mucus in my throat. It seems to be the cause of my snoring at night and when I blow my nose sometimes, it seems to block the air from coming out of my nose.

Brief Answer:
Likely from post nasal drainage - here are some suggestions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I do know what you are talking about and it can be quite irritating.

I will assume that you have had this for more than a few weeks - if it's been a shorter time, it is probably from a cold-type virus that will pass.

But if it has been going on for longer, it is probably from drainage from allergic or irritant rhinitis. Irritant rhinitis is where our nose/sinuses have some inflammation from things in our environment such as laundry dryer sheets, detergent and fabric softener fragrances, tobacco smoke, new carpets, etc. It may occur in a low grade way so that you are not aware of any sensitivity to things.

So what to do about it:

1. You can try a mucolytic like guifenesin (e.g. is Mucinex). These work by decreasing the thickness of the mucus. You need to drink a lot of water for it to work, because it thins the mucus by drawing water into the mucus.

2. Try a nasal steroid spray such as Flonase. I realize the problem is not in your nose but in your throat, but that mucus is probably coming from the back of your nose/sinuses. It may take a week or so for you to see if a steroid nasal spray is going to help you. If it is showing some signs of helping, you can continue to use this daily, and eventually, every other day. Steroid nasal sprays work by decreasing inflammation and reactivity of the mucus membranes. They do not have an immediate effect. Might help your snoring too.

3. Sounds like you are already using saline in some form. A nettipot can help by washing away secretions. It is hard to get it in the back where you need it, but sniffing slightly while you pour the saline in your nose, and turning your head as far as you can so you feel some of the saline going into your throat may help. Then spit what got into your throat out of your mouth.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
