Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: I have been suffering from poor memory and gradually since about 3 to 4 years it has been growing worse. I am 50 years old. I have high BP but its under control with medication. I also have Hypothyroidism for which i take Eltroxin 1.5 mg every day. I don't have sugar problem. I am concerned about forgetfulness. I forget names of friends, names of consumer products used at home, forget names of prominant people. Today i forgot about the word "Earthquake" & had to phone my friend to find out. I also forget where i put my keys, letters, documents etc.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Decreased memory or dementia may be age related or secondary to some disease.
Idiopathic memory loss at this age comes under heading of presenile dementia only when other causes have been ruled out.
As you are hypertensive and hypothyroid, both these can lead to memory problems.
What is the current status of your thyroid levels(TSH).
Have you any depression?
Have you been investigated for diabetes.
Any addiction, high risk sexual behaviour.
You need to get following investigations.
Brain MRI, blood sugar(fasting, PP), liver and kidney function test, vitamin B12, calcium, VItamin D3, HIV(if imaging contributory).
If any etiology is detected you can take treatment accordingly.
But in case of idiopathic presenile dementia you can take some medications like donepizil, memantine, rivastigmine after consulting with a neurologist.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Do get back to me for further queries.
