Posted on Sat, 11 Jun 2016
Question: I fell 3 weeks ago and hurt my hand. I was able to bend my hand and fingers. I noticed my knuckle had a bump on it after I fell. It is red and appears to be swollen. What could this be?

Brief Answer:
It can be hematoma or a fracture

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. This bump can be collection of blood which is called as hematoma. Or it can be fracture fragment. I would suggest you to get x ray of the hand to confirm the diagnosis. If there is fracture then you will need splinting of the fracture by plaster or bandage.
If there is no fracture then you can apply hot water fomentation, compression bandage and volini gel. You can take Brufen tablet if pain is there. This swelling will take three to four weeks for complete healing.
You may also upload a photograph of the affected area so that I can review it.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there are any other followup questions.
thanks

Thank you. Here is a photo. It wasn't hurting at all until I accidentally hit it on something last night. Now, it hurts a little when I bend it. I am still ableto bend it completely. Thanks again.

Brief Answer:
it is collection of blood

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for sending these images. It is collection of blood in the knuckle skin. It has become fibrosed so it is feeling a little firm nodule like. You do not need to worry about this. You need to do hot water fomentation and gentle rubbing over it and it will dissolve in three to four weeks. For pain you can take Brufen tablet for pain relief.
thanks

Thank you. I'm not familiar with hot water fomentation. Is there a pack I need to buy?
