Suggest Treatment For Persistent Nausea While On Nexium

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: Following my evening meal, when retiring for the evening, I regularly suffer from nausea which is persistent and the only relief possible is to sleep with my upper body elevated on pillows by about 45 degrees. I also sometimes need to take antacid medicine for relief. If I eat the evening meal early and retire about 3 to 4 hours after eating, I do not seem to suffer the same symptoms.
I am female, aged 63, 5' 4" in height, and weigh 143Lbs.

As well as Mycardis, I also take Nexium every night before retiring.

Brief Answer:
Following answer to your query.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

What you are experiencing it's typical for GERD (acid reflux disease). Patients with GERD will feel nausea and chest discomfort if they lay down to rest directly after meal. It's typical that sleeping in 45° will relieve the symptoms.

If you were my patient I would recommend to do the following examinations as part of proper evaluation:
- Blood work
- Chest x ray
- ECG
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Upper endoscopy
This will help to find out exactly what is causing your symptoms.

Meantime I would like to suggest:
- eat often and small portions
- avoid laying down 3 hours after eating
- avoid using spicy food, alcohol, caffeine and smoking.
- use antacids ( Malox )
- increase the dose of Nexium one tablet in the morning and one in the evening for 8 weeks.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
