Question: My son was diagnosed as having peroneal nerve entrapment. He's had symptoms for at least two months. His doctor recommends that he see a plastic surgeon. Why a plastic surgeon? Is there any other option besides surgery?

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

I am a little puzzled regarding the choice of a plastic surgeon. Usually when surgery is needed it is done by a neurosurgeon. However that may differ among different countries. Also surgeons of different specialties like orthopedics or plastic surgeons may have done further formation in peripheral nerve surgery and have that as a subspecialty.

As for the need for surgery, that is rarely needed for peroneal neuropathy. Because usually it is due to a trauma in most cases rest and physical therapy is enough and there is gradual improvement. Surgery is done when there is a persisting factor which keeps compressing the nerve such as a tumor or scar tissue and release is necessary. So the decision depends on the cause, perhaps if you could provide some information on that might be useful. If you are not sure about that you should discuss it with your doctor.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
